Alexander John MacIver

 - 61 years of age [BD September 12, 1946]

- Single parent whose daughter is attending SFU obtaining her Master's Degree in communications

- Called to the Manitoba Bar (June 26, 1973). Supervising Attorney Legal Aid Manitoba (‘73-‘80) responsible for legal and support staff of 16; poverty law with extensive family and criminal law practice; appeared as lead counsel on two appeals before the Supreme Court of Canada (Mitchell v The Queen (1975) 61 DLR (3d) 77 and R v Gorog 1977 3 WWR 96) [administrative law cases which resulted in the repeal of the Parole Act of Canada]. MacIver has also appeared as counsel in many reported decisions both in Manitoba and British Columbia. He has appeared before all levels of tribunals, administrative, provincial, federal, through to and including the Supreme Court of Canada.

 - Left Legal Aid to enter into private practice in partnership (Houston & MacIver '80 - '88); sole practitioner since '88; called to the British Columbia Bar May 17, 1996 - general practice with emphasis on personal injury, professional negligence and family law [inclusive of litigation and mediation].

 - Lead negotiator in collective bargaining process representing management in some cases and employees in other instances to finalize employment contracts.

 - Completed the certificate course in Alternative Dispute Resolution offered through the University of Windsor Law School (December/95); completed the B. C. C.L.E. certificate course in Advanced Commercial Mediation (Feb/96); completed the B. C. C.L.E. certificate course in Family Law Mediation (May/96);

Former Chairman of the St. Vital School Division (1983-1986); continues to fund Alexander John MacIver 'Award for English' - trust established granting award to student graduating in Grade 12 with highest mark in English

Past President of the Manitoba Society of Criminology (1977-1983),); former vice-president John Howard & Elizabeth Fry Society of Manitoba (1974-1978); former Executive Board Member of the Canadian Association for the Prevention of Crime (Ottawa) (1979-1983); executive board member for several community based organizations [1970’ and 1980’s];

 - Formerly served as one of three members of the Provincial Government’s Policy Committee (‘86) to develop Government Policy on Criminal Justice and revisions to the Small Claims Procedures; former member of the Rules Committee of the Manitoba Court of Appeal;

 - Organizer for several legal seminars for the bar and bench [e.g. the last presentation focused on ‘Advocacy in the Court of Appeal’]; guest lecturer in the area of both family and criminal law at Robson Hall law school (U. of Man.); guest ‘moot court judge’ at the invitation of Robson Hall (Man.) and Queen’s University Law School (Kingston, Ont.); guest lecturer Winnipeg Police Academy

 - Co-founder and executive board member of Manitoba Trial Lawyer’s Association; editor and publisher of the Criminal Law Newsletter; published public education articles in Winnipeg newspapers concerned with the legal system, notably, ‘The Jury System in Manitoba’ and ‘Judge Shopping’; published poetry in the Crown Attorney’s Newsletter related to the Justice System. Also published 2 poems through Library of Congress [part of international collection of poetry].

 - A member in good standing with the Law Societies of both British Columbia and Manitoba [last appeared in Manitoba as counsel in the Court of Queen's Bench to complete an infant settlement for BC clients], member Canadian Bar Association, Family Mediation Canada and British Columbia Subsections on Mediation and Family Law and a member of MediationNow.
